As if the guy pretending to be a waiter in New Jersey (yesterday's odd news award) wasn't a bold enough fake occupational move. Today the Southern Ledger reports that there is a Cuban national in Los Angeles who got tired of waiting to be deported and decided to collect thousands of dollars in legal fees while pretending to be a licensed immigration lawyer. This gentleman avoided detection for a while by changing his name to a name similar to bonafide lawyer's name and by using a valid California bar number. Some might argue that at least the man was gainfully employed and helping to alleviate the problems associated with illegal immigration. Wonder why the article did not mention whether he did a good job representing his clients? Does his win-loss record matter? And you have to remember that some might think that by this criminal choosing to pretend to be a lawyer he really did not miss his true calling by very much. Honestly, this guy has got to be one of the most despicable dishonest people on the planet. I wonder if the justice system will even be able to attempt to right the potentially many wrongs that he has done to so many fellow immigrants?
An Odd News Award: A Vegan's Obscene Personalized License Plate Request Denied
USA Today garners an Odd News Award today for their report about an obscene personalized license plate. This is funny only because it is totally innocent. A 38-year-old affirmed vegan in Colorado wanted to let the driving world know that she loves Tofu. To shout this to the world this lady requested a personalized license plate that would read "ILVTOFU." Clearly, "ILVTOFU" would send the message "I Love Tofu," right? You Tofu lovers are saying: "Darn right!" Can you believe, the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles denied the personalized plate as obscene. They explained that the plate might be misinterpreted as "I love to FU" which in some circles has absolutely nothing to do with the cherished Tofu.

This is a bit of odd news that sounds like something you might see in the movies.
"Bogus waiter tricks customers at 2 NJ restaurants
The Associated Press
HOBOKEN, N.J. - Police say a man posing as a waiter collected $186 in cash from diners at two restaurants in New Jersey and walked out with the money in his pocket.
Diners described the bogus waiter as a spikey-haired 20-something wearing a dark blue or black button-down shirt, yellow tie and khaki pants.
Police say he approached two women dining at Hobson's Choice in Hoboken, N.J. around 7:20 p.m. on Thursday. He asked if they needed anything else before paying. They said no and handed him $90 in cash.
About two hours later he approached three women dining at Margherita's Pizza and Cafe. He asked if they were ready to pay, took $96 and never returned with their change."
You have to wonder what is going on here? Is this just a young man doing a dare or a prank. Is this a recently out of work guy? or Is this nothing more than just some common criminal with a little bit of creativity and a lot of nerve? Still, I could see it as a scene in a movie. This story kind of reminds me of the deli scenes from the 1986 movie "Something Wild" staring Jeff Daniels and Melanie Griffith. "Something Wild" is a strange but entertaining movie. It is definitely worth a watch. If you watch it, watch it only after the kids go to bed.
The odd news award of the weekend goes to this strange story of the pretend waiter thief.
